New Delhi: Y S Sharmila, the chief of YSR Telangana Party (YSRTP) and sister of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy, officially joined the Congress on Thursday. Addressing the media, Sharmila emphasized the Congress party’s standing as the largest secular party in India, praising its role in upholding the country’s cultural values and contributing to the foundations of the nation.

Speculation had been rife before the Telangana Assembly elections held in November last year, hinting at a possible merger between Sharmila’s outfit and the Congress. While the merger did not materialize, Sharmila chose to stay away from the elections, citing her desire to prevent any splitting of pro-Congress votes by her candidates.

Sharmila’s move to join the Congress adds a significant political development to the landscape, and her alignment with the grand old party will undoubtedly shape the political dynamics in the region.
